Mary Lyon, host of DIY Crafts, offers a few helpful no-sew tips. Here's a twist. How about using toupee tape to hold fabric together? If, for instance, you want to hem a pair of pants without sewing, pull a length of toupee tape from the roll, apply it to the hem edge of the pant leg, and pull away the adhesive backing to expose the sticky part. Turn the edge up, sticking it to the pant leg and leaving a finished edge (figure A).
Use a button gun to replace a missing button. Follow the directions that come with the device. Place the button atop the prongs. Push the prongs through the fabric with the button on the right side of the fabric. From the wrong side, hold the fabric firmly against the button with your fingers. Pull the trigger of the button gun, and remove the prongs from the fabric. The button will be secured to the fabric (figure B).
When fabric needs patching, purchase an adhesive-backed mending patch, and iron it, shiny side down, to the fabric that needs patching. The iron should be on a wool setting (figure C).
Use fabric glue to attach merit badges to Scout uniforms ( figure D).
