    Adding a Ball of Yarn

When you need to add a new ball of yarn at the beginning of a row, it's a simple matter of attaching it with a slide knot and then burying the ends of the yarn. If you run out of yarn in the middle of a row, however, you'll need to approach it differently.

    1. Hold a strand of the new yarn (two strands if you're working with double strands) with the previous strand(s) and knit (or purl) 1 stitch (figure A).

    2. Taking the short ends in your left hand, hold them over the left needle (figure B) and purl a stitch with the new yarn, burying the short strand(s) (figure C).

Knit or purl the next stitch with just the new yarn.

    3. Repeat this process for 5 or 6 stitches; then you can cut off the old yarn without worrying that it will ravel.

    Blending Yarn

When you want to add another color and blend for a subtle look, the techniques is the same, except you're using a strand of the first color and one of the new color:

    1. Holding a strand (or two) of the new color with the previous strand(s), knit (or purl) 1 stitch (figure A).

    2. Taking the short end(s) in your left hand, hold it over the left needle and purl a stitch with the new color-combined yarn, burying the short strand(s).

Knit or purl the next stitch.

    3. Repeat this process of burying the yarn ends under a stitch and then knitting a stitch for 5 or 6 stitches, as before.

    4. Work 4 rows of blending, then use the technique to change to the second color, cutting off the first color and adding in the second, which you were blending in previously.
