Plaid Enterprises representative Peggy Caldwell makes decorative floor cloths using painter's canvas and stencils. Materials:
Preprimed canvas from an art-supply store Optional: gesso (to use if the canvas has not been primed) Sandpaper Paintbrush Sea sponge Plaid French Wash Sponging Paint® Masking tape Dry-brush stencil paint in dark red, green and yellow Stencil brushes Summer Vine stencil Water-based polyurethane - If the canvas has not been primed, apply a coat of gesso to seal it. Sand lightly after it dries. Painter's canvas comes in a number of sizes, up to 9' by 12'.
- Paint the canvas using a sea sponge and green Plaid French Wash Sponging Paint. Let dry (figure A).
- Tape a strip of masking tape along the edge all the way around. Measure in 1/2", and tape another strip of masking tape around the canvas (figure B).
- Using a stencil brush and dark red dry-brush stencil paint, apply a border stripe between the two strips of tape. Remove the masking tape (figure C).
- Place the Summer Vine stencil diagonally in one corner. Stencil the vines, using a stencil brush and brown dry-brush stencil paint. Stand the brush straight up and down, and use a circling motion. The lighter the pressure you use, the lighter the stencil will be. Vary the pressure to create natural shading.
- Use green dry-brush stencil paint and a stencil brush to stencil the leaves. Add highlights to the leaves with golden dry-brush stencil paint. Blend the colors together on the canvas (figure D).
- Stencil the vines in all four corners of the canvas. Then stencil the vines lengthwise on the floor cloth.
- Brush on a coat of water-based polyurethane to seal the floor cloth. Let dry and apply a second coat.
