Brad Staggs discusses the many different types of interior paint available to the consumer.

One of the most common do-it-yourself home improvement projects is painting. Brad Staggs offers some quick tips for selecting the right interior paint for your home.

    • Buy the best quality with the highest pigment content.

    • Use primer with a stain blocker -- and one that is mildew-resistant -- for kitchens and baths. Apply primer carefully to prevent ridges that might show through the top coat.

    • Use oil-based paint on cabinets and other surfaces that are touched frequently. The oil content in these paints prevent the oils and acids in your skin from causing the paint to deteriorate over time.

    • Use latex for baseboards, trim and walls.

    • High-gloss is easy to clean, but shows every imperfection on the painted surface. Semi-gloss has less shine than high-gloss, but is easier to clean. Eggshell finishes and flat are becoming more popular as more durable, high quality paints become available in that finish (making them easier to clean).
