One of the most enjoyable aspects of decorating a guest bedroom, according to decorating and design expert Nancy Golden, is that you can indulge your fantasies in creating the decor. Because the room doesn't have to match the rest of the house, it can be as romantic or dramatic as you wish to make it -- so long as it's comfortable and inviting. The owners of this home enjoy antiquing and flea-marketing, so Golden opted for a shabby chic style of decorating in order to use many of their finds in unusual ways. The boring beige walls were the first item of business -- they needed to be made much more interesting. Golden had selected a fabric (figure A) that contained soft shades of several colors (greens, peaches, lavenders, etc.), and from this palette she chose a whimsical but restful lavender for the walls. After the walls were painted, Golden invited stencil artist Jan Dressler, of Dressler Design Company, to work her magic in the room. Her first stencil project was a set of trompe l'oeil ("fool the eye") louvered shutters on the wall beside each window. Materials: Stencil Painter's tape High-density foam roller Acrylic paint Charcoal-gray cream-based paint Stencil brush Flow medium Paint tray Hair dryer - Load roller with paint and unload excess onto tray liner or paper towels.
- Start applying paint lightly to stencil, increasing pressure as the paint builds up on the wall. This process helps prevent the paint from bleeding under the stencil. Remember: The process of stenciling requires that you apply the paint lightly, building up layers to get the completed image (figure B).
- If you wish to speed up the drying process, you can use a hair dryer.
- Using a blunt stencil brush, add shadowing with a cream-base paint (this is an oil-based formula). (Note: Dressler stencils include detailed instructions for shading.) Don't worry about being exact: if you make a mistake, you can wipe it off with mineral spirits.
Tip: In addition to placing books and magazines in the guest bedroom, place a photo album with pictures of the guest and your family to give them something to look at and to bring up fond memories of times spent together.
