Nancy Golden and her guest, Chicago designer Nate Berkus (who's also her son), tackle the special problems posed in decorating a loft. Golden explains that she began the project by covering some of the room's austere features, such as a bright-red door and a red stripe under the large window wall (figure A). After meeting with the loft's owners, she and Berkus decided to go for an industrial, urban-chic look for the space. Opting to add metallic highlights to the two walls immediately visible upon entering the room, she painted the other walls white, then applied a soft plum with a metallic finish on the back wall of the dining room. The effect -- which was achieved by applying a flat coat to the wall and using the same color, touched with a metallic silver, as a top coat -- was then repeated on the front wall, using a dove-gray base coat and a silvered top coat with all the brushstrokes left visible. Berkus defines lofts as spaces that often used to be something else -- a warehouse or other commercial building -- but have now been converted into residential space. They can feature any of a variety of architectural treasures, such as exposed brick, wood timbers, high ceilings and tall windows, all of which will play an important role in the finished decor (the hardness or softness of the design can depend to a great extent on the space's existing features). The Bare Facts: Because color is so important in a room, when you're sketching out your floor plan designs, it can be a good idea to color in each piece with a colored pencil to see how the colors look together before you bring the furniture into its place.
