Interior designer Greg Walsh demonstrates some great techniques for adding style to any room as he revamps a drab, cluttered home office.

Greg's main challenge is to give a bit of spark to a worn-looking home office. First, he gives outdated flocked wallpaper a new look by applying a color wash made of equal parts water and gold paint. To add coziness to the room, he paints the ceiling a warm shade of red. The molding and trim are left white to create contrast between the gold and red hues. A new rust-finished dome chandelier blends nicely with the red ceiling and gold walls (figure A).

A tall cabinet is built to provide storage and serve as a focal point for the room. Topped with a junk-store finial painted white to match the molding and filled with an entertainment center, family photos and books, it fulfills its twin functions elegantly (figure B).

The desk is covered with a handsome fabric slipcover and topped with a plate of glass that provides a work surface and helps keep the slipcover in place (figure C). Sheer curtain panels are added to the windows and French doors. The window treatments are completed with rich green drapes (figure D). Regrouped pictures, mirrors and photos complete the room's great new look (figure E).
