Architect David Watson helps a client create a feminine new look for a boring all-white bedroom. A blue texture-painted wall becomes the colorful backdrop for a filmy mosquito-net canopy. Using the existing bedspread as a starting point, the architect chose a deep shade of sky-blue paint for the bedroom's headboard wall. To give the bold blue a more subtle, textured effect, sheets of plastic were pressed against the still-wet paint. When the plastic is peeled away, the result is a soft, uneven surface. This procedure can be sloppy: in addition to masking off the adjoining walls and ceiling, securely mask baseboards with plastic to prevent leakage. Use a roller to apply a heavy coat of paint to a section of the wall, press a large piece of plastic to the surface, crinkles and all (figure A), then peel the plastic away. A wooden shelf hung above the bed is draped with a length of filmy mosquito netting for a canopy effect. The shelf was made by stapling fabric to a half-circle of plywood and attaching it to the wall with brackets. A picture wall opposite the bed gets an organizing boost with narrow wooden shelves (figure B). A length of molding glued to a 1" by 2" board forms the shelves (figure C), which are attached to the wall with metal brackets. Pictures are grouped on the shelves, giving the wall arrangement cohesiveness while allowing the flexibility to change the pictures as the mood strikes. Note: - Always use wall anchors for support if brackets aren't attached to wall studs.
