The sitting area features a romantic window treatment fasioned from inexpensive muslin. The striped fabric used in the sleeping area is repeated in the chair covering, bringing continuity to the room

Interior designer Ann Sundet uses a monochromatic color scheme in shades of rich taupe and cream to transform a ho-hum guest bedroom into a romantic retreat. A touch of gold in refurbished accessories brings warmth and romance to the room.

The first step in remaking this room is replacing a summery yellow-and-blue bedspread with a soft cream matelassé coverlet. Cream-and-taupe striped pillows are added to complement the floral pattern of a new padded headboard in similar colors.

The cream-and-taupe striped fabric is also used to fashion a new skirt for the bedside table and to cover a chair in the sitting area, providing continuity throughout the room. A fringed cloth on the nightstand table softens the stripes. A pair of yard-sale lamps, previously bright yellow, are given an antique look by applying gold paint topped with a crackle finish.

In the sitting area, a romantic window treatment fashioned from inexpensive muslin frames the windows while maintaining the view. Several yards of muslin are knotted, draped and intertwined with tasseled cording. This inexpensive treatment gives a neoclassic look and totally changes the appearance of the room. A white plant stand topped with a pot of dried hydrangeas dusted with silver and gold spray paint adds a warm touch.
