  • Removing Tile
    From "Creative Wall Coverings"
    episode DCWC-102

Host Cynthia Tinsley and her guests give a facelift to a faux fireplace covered with tile that's more suited to a bathroom than to a fireplace. They demonstrate the processes of removing and replacing tile, and then the mantel gets a dash of class: a faux marble finish is applied by mother-and-daughter artists TK and TK. As an added bonus, we learn how to tile a curved wall.

    Tile Removal

    Steps:

    1. Using a sledgehammer and chisel, knock the tile loose (figure A). Be sure to employ a shallow angle of attack on the tiles to prevent unnecessary damage of the surface underneath (figure B).

Tip: Tile shards can be very sharp and may fly in all directions, so be sure to wear safety goggles.

    2. Carefully clean up any debris, using heavy-duty garbage bags to collect the tile shards.

    3. Peel away any remaining mesh backing from the surface (figure C).
