Use tile, glass beads and broken pottery to turn a plaster urn into a work of art. Find inexpensive decorative platters and plates at yard sales, and break them up for mosaics. Incorporate charms, jewelry and chains into your creation for a funky look. Materials:
Plaster urn Pieces of tile, glass beads, broken pottery or old jewelry Tile adhesive Grout Optional: combination tile adhesive and grout Flat-edged knife Grout float Sponge and pail of water Clean rag - Gather together your mosaic materials--tiles, glass beads and broken crockery (figure A).
- Use a flat-edged knife to apply tile adhesive to the back of each piece (figure B), and set the pieces in place on the urn (figure C).
- When the urn is covered with mosaic pieces, let the adhesive dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Use a grout float to smooth grout into all the cracks between pieces (figure D).
- Wipe the urn several times with a damp sponge to remove most of the grout from the surface of the tiles (figure E). A haze will remain on the tile, which can be buffed off when the piece is completely dry.
