Take a plain, inexpensive chair and turn it into an authentic-looking Scandinavian piece with a wash of color and a painted pattern stenciled on the back. If desired, add a soft, old-fashioned-looking skirt to the seat for a finishing touch.

Scandinavian country furniture is often characterized by painted woodwork, simple designs and the restrained use of ornamentation. The muted blues and greens of the Scandinavian palette, often aged and faded, are integral to this pleasant, feminine style, which fits beautifully in a casual dining room or an eat-in kitchen.

    Materials:

    Old or new chair
    Medium-grit sandpaper
    Tack cloth
    Primer/sealer
    Latex paint for base coat
    Polyurethane sealer
    Paintbrush
    Acrylic paint
    Antiquing gel
    Stencil paint
    Small foam brush
    Tracing paper
    Mylar®
    Scandinavian pattern to stencil
    Utility knife
    Cutting board
    Stencil adhesive

    1. Sand the chair, and wipe clean with a tack cloth.

    2. Prime the chair, let dry, and apply a base coat of latex paint.

    3. Make a tinted antiquing gel by mixing one part acrylic paint with one part antiquing gel. Apply a coat of the tinted gel to the chair, brushing in one direction only (figure A).

    4. Use a rag to remove some of the antiquing gel, wiping in the direction of the brushstrokes (figure B). How much paint you wipe off is up to you.

    5. Make a stencil, using Scandinavian-style letters and patterns. Find patterns in books from the library or an art store. Begin by tracing the desired pattern on tracing paper (figure C). Lay Mylar over it, and trace the image onto the Mylar (figure D). When making letter stencils, be sure to leave little bridges across the letters to hold the center of the letter to the main body of the stencil. If you don't, the middle of the letter will fall out.

    6. Very carefully cut out the stencil shapes with a utility knife (figure E).

    7. Spray the back of the stencil with stencil adhesive, and center it on the back of the chair (figure F).

    8. Lightly dab on stencil paint with a foam brush (figure G). Applying a few light coats should prevent paint from seeping under the stencil.

    9. Peel off the Mylar stencil to reveal the stenciled pattern (figure H).

    10. Finish with a coat or two of clear polyurethane.
