Teacher and author Julie McGuffee of Testor Paints uses the Visions® airbrushing kit to paint a pansy design on a rug.

    Materials:

    Rug or carpet remnant
    Clear Con-Tact® paper
    Permanent black marker
    Pansy pattern
    Visions Paint kit
    Craft knife
    Easel
    Paper towels

    1. Place clear Con-Tact over a pansy pattern, and trace the design, using a black permanent marker.

    2. Remove the backing from the Con-Tact paper, and apply the paper to the top of the rug or carpet remnant.

    3. Using a craft knife, cut along the design lines, but leave the individual sections of the design stuck to the rug (figure A). The Con-Tact paper will mask areas of the rug that aren't being painted.

    4. Prepare the paint. The Visions system comes with a propellant can, an air hose that attaches to the top of the propellant and paint tints. Follow the manufacturer's directions.

    5. Remove the center Con-Tact piece from one of the flowers (figure B).

    6. Place the rug upright on an easel. Because Visions spray paint must be applied with the bottle upright, the rug must be vertical. Spray the rug yellow in the area that was unmasked by removing the Con-Tact paper. The mist is very light (figure C).

    7. Return the center Con-Tact paper piece to the rug, placing it over the area that was painted yellow. This will mask the center so it won't be painted green along with the leaves. Remove the Con-Tact paper leaf pieces from the rug.

    8. Hook up the green tint to the Visions propellant can, and spray the leaf areas green (figure D).

    9. Add some shading and highlighting to the pansy. Put the Con-Tact paper pieces back onto the leaf areas to protect them. Take off one of the Con-Tact paper petal pieces, and spray the petal area with purple (figure E).

    10. Remove other Con-Tact paper petal pieces, and continue shading and highlighting the petals (figure F). Add black to the center of the flower.

    11. When you're done, clean the painting equipment with water and mild detergent.
