    Materials:

    Wood -- 1" x 2"
A miter box and hand saw
    1/4" wire mesh
    Floral wire
    Wire cutter
    Wood glue
    Masking tape
    Nails
    Double-pointed U nails
    Pliers
    Hammer
    Tape measure
    Pencil
    Goggles
    Drill and bits
    Rope
    Acrylic paint
    Brushes
Suet cake (Note: Suet is animal fat.)
    One adult

    1. Cut 1" x 2" pieces of wood (figure A) to the following measurements: two that are 5" long and two that are 9" long.

    2. Drill two holes in one of the 9" boards. Knot the end of a piece of rope; then put the rope up through one of the holes and down the side of the other hole (figure B) and tie another knot. This is the hanger, so make sure to tie the knots really tight.

    3. Put wood glue at the joints and nail the wood pieces together. Short pieces should be inside the two long ones. Also nail the short pieces in about 1" from the longer edges (figure C). Use masking tape to hold the wood together while you nail.

    4. Paint to decorate.

    5. Cut two pieces of wire mesh about 7"by 7". Fold over the edges so sharp points of the wire will not be exposed (figure D).

    6. Hold the double pointed U nails with pliers and nail a piece of mesh onto one side of the wood frame all the way around (figure E).

    7. On the reverse side, again using the double-pointed U nails, attach the second piece of mesh at the bottom only.

    8. Cut two pieces of wire (figure F) to tie the wire mesh closed.

    9. Insert the suet cake, wire shut, and hang outside for the birds to enjoy!
    Tips:
    • Always have an adult supervise when you use tools like a drill, a saw, etc.

    • Be careful of the wire mesh -- the cut edges can be sharp and can cut.
Products: All products available at craft, all-purpose, and hardware stores nationwide. Suet cakes are available at most pet, hardware, or feed stores.
