Charlotte Police Officer Wade Cantrell offers the following advice on bicycle safety: - Helmets: Always wear a helmet and make sure it is securely strapped on. Pull on your chin strap to see if it is loose. Tighten it if it is loose -- a loose helmet will not protect you.
- PSI (Pounds per Square Inch): When you're filling a tire, you don't want to overinflate or underinflate it. An overinflated tire, one that has has too much pressure, will puncture if it strikes an object such as a curb. If a tire is underinflated, it will cause you to go slower and have to peddle much harder.
- Traffic: Always ride with traffic -- if you ride against it, you may get hit. A bicycle, which is considered a motor vehicle, is applicable to all motor-vehicle laws, e.g., stopping at stop signs and lights, and so on. You are required to do all the things the driver of a car would do.
- Awareness: When riding, know what is all around you -- always pay attention!
