"Kid concoction expert" and author John Thomas demonstrates fun concoctions kids can make in the kitchen: spray chalk, jewel and gem goop, foamy paint and crazy critters. Spray Chalk Materials: 4 tablespoons cornstarch 1 cup warm water 4 to 6 drops food coloring Mixing bowl Mixing spoon Small spray-mist bottle - Mix all ingredients in a mixing bowl.
- Pour the mixture into a small spray-mist bottle. Shake and apply as desired.
Jewel and Gem Goop Materials: 1/2 cup white glue 2 cups rock salt 6 to 8 drops food coloring Mixing bowl Mixing spoon Cookie cutters - Mix rock salt and food coloring together. Add glue and continue mixing for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Mold and sculpt jewel and gem goop, using your hands.
- Spoon goop into plastic cookie cutters. Drying time will vary according to size and thickness (figure A).
Foamy Paint Materials: Can of white shaving cream Food coloring Plastic ice-cube tray or muffin tin Small wire whisk - Place a small dab of shaving cream into several sections of an ice-cube tray or muffin tin.
- Add 1 to 2 drops of food coloring to each section, and mix with a small wire whisk (figure B).
Crazy Critters Materials: 1/3 cup quick-setting plaster of Paris 5 tablespoons water Large glass measuring cup Mixing spoon Balloons of assorted sizes Funnel with large opening 1 tablespoon tempera paint or 5 to 7 drops food coloring Paperclip or clothespin Decorating supplies such as paint, glue, glitter, feathers, etc. - Blow up a balloon as large as possible. Clamp the end of the balloon shut with a paperclip or clothespin. Allow it to stretch for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Deflate the balloon, and attach it to the funnel.
- Mix water, plaster and paint or food coloring in a large measuring cup until smooth. Pour plaster into the balloon. Remove the funnel, and tie the balloon shut (figure C).
- Stretch the balloon into any shape, and hold it until the plaster begins to become firm.
- Let the plaster set for 1 hour.
- Tear the balloon off the plaster shape. Paint or decorate.
