Create freeform designs using diluted fabric paint in a spray bottle.

Donna Erickson of Target Stores explains how to jazz up kids' clothes with creative art. She stencils cow spots on a baby outfit, paints cookie-cutter shapes on a T-shirt, stitches a surprise pocket on a sweatshirt, transfers artwork to sweatshirts and spray-paints a T-shirt.

    Cow Spots

    Materials:
    One-piece cotton baby suit
    Black fabric paint
    Household sponge
    Paper
    Scissors
    Clothespin
    Paper plate
    Cardboard

    1. Pour black fabric paint onto a paper plate. Cut a piece of household sponge, and clip a clothespin to one end.

    2. Cut a cow-spot shape from a piece of paper to use as a stencil.

    3. Place a piece of cardboard inside the baby suit to prevent paint from bleeding through.

    4. Place the cow-spot stencil on the fabric. Dip the sponge piece in the black paint, and stencil cow spots all over the suit (figure A).
    Cookie-Cutter Painted T-Shirt

    Materials:
    T-shirt
    Cookie cutters
Fabric paint in variety of colors
    Paper plates
    Cardboard

    1. Pour fabric paints onto paper plates, using one color per plate.

    2. Place a piece of cardboard inside the shirt to prevent paint from bleeding through.

    3. Dip cookie cutters into paint, and press them onto the T-shirt.
    Pocket Sweatshirt

    Materials:
    Sweatshirt
    Kids' artwork
    Fabric
    Zipper
    Sewing machine
    Scissors
    Fabric marker

    1. Select an object from a child's favorite piece of artwork. Donna used a train engine.

    2. Trace around the engine on fabric and cut it out.

    3. Cut the engine in half horizontally. Insert a zipper between the two pieces, and stitch in place (figure B).

    4. Applique the train engine on the front of a sweatshirt.

    5. Unzip the zipper, and store small toys in the pocket (figure C).
    Variation:
    • Copy a child's artwork onto the front of a sweatshirt with fabric paint. Use your nondominant hand so the art will look more kidlike. (figure D).

    Spray Painted T-Shirt

    Materials:
    Spray bottle
    Fabric paint
    Water
    T-shirt
    Clothesline

    1. Mix one part fabric paint and one part water, and pour the mixture into a spray bottle.

    2. Hang a T-shirt on a clothesline, and spray the front with different colors of paint.
