    Figure C

Household-hints expert Donovan Jon Fandre shows how to whip up play dough, slimy "goop" and bubble-blowing mixture.

    Play Dough

    Materials:
    2 cups water
    2 cups flour
    1 cup salt
    2 tablespoons cream of tartar
    1 tablespoon vegetable oil
    Saucepan
    Mixing spoon
    Food coloring
    Zippered plastic bag

    1. Mix ingredients in a saucepan, and place over low heat. Stir until the mixture reaches the consistency of dough. Let cool, and store in a sealed container.

    2. To add color, place the dough in a zippered plastic bag, add a few drops of food coloring, close the bag, and squeeze to work the color into the dough without staining your hands (figure A).

    Slime

    Materials:
    1 cup water
    1 cup white glue
2 tablespoons liquid tempera paint or 7 to 10 drops food coloring
    1 1/3 cup warm water
    4 teaspoons borax laundry additive
    Mixing bowl
    Mixing spoon
    Zippered plastic bag

    1. Mix white glue, water and tempera paint in a mixing bowl.

    2. Combine warm water and borax and add to the glue mixture. Mix. Store in an airtight container or zippered plastic bag (figure B).

    Bubble-Blowing Mixture

    Materials:
    2 cups warm water
    1 cup dishwashing liquid
    1 teaspoon sugar
    3 to 4 tablespoons glycerin
    Mixing bowl
    Mixing spoon
    Coat hanger

Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl. Bend a coat hanger into a circle about 6" in diameter. Dip the coat hanger into the bubble mixture, and pull it through the air to release a big bubble (figure C).

    Tip:

    • Spray hairspray over kids' colored pictures to preserve them.
