    Materials:

    10 plastic .5-liter water bottles
    A cup
    Paper funnel
    Play sand
Four one-gallon plastic bags -- sealable
    Food coloring
    Scissors
    A ruler
    A bowl
    Hot glue
    Paint pens
    String or rope
    Four sticks or dowels
    A basketball

    1. Start with the sand. If it's damp, let it dry out. Hint: If it's very wet, you can microwave it for about 5 minutes and let it cool.

    2. Make sure your bottles are clean and dry.

    3. Place about four cups of sand in the plastic bag and add a big squirt of food coloring(figure A). Seal the bag and mush it around to mix the food coloring into the sand. Add more food coloring if needed.

    4. Using your paper funnel, pour the dry sand into the bottles (figure B) until they are about half-full.

    5. Screw the caps on the bottles and hot-glue the caps on so the sand can't get out (Figure C).

    6. Decorate the bottles with paint pens if desired.

    7. Cut two pieces of rope at least 12' or longer, and lay them so they're parallel to each other and about 2' to 3' apart. Stick the four dowels into the ground and tie the rope to them (figure D).

    8. Set your "pins" up at one end, in a triangle, and use the basketball for your bowling ball.
    Tips:
    • Be careful not to get food coloring on clothes, countertops, or floors -- it can stain.

    • Have an adult supervise when you use hot glue -- it can burn.
Products: All products are available at grocery, craft, all-purpose and hardware stores nationwide.
