    Insecticidal soaps are safe to use, but keep in mind that they kill beneficial insects as well as bugs you don't want. Dormant oils, such as Volck Oil Spray, are wonderful to use, because they'll smother some insects that are hard to get other ways, like scale (figure A). To make your own home-remedy insecticide, mix phosphate-free dishwashing liquid with water and add a splash of vegetable, sesame, or olive oil. Put the concoction in a sprayer and use on plants.
