Q: Do you have any suggestions for displays using flowers in patriotic colors?

A: (Jessie Mack Burns, DIY gardening expert) If the colors of the flag stir your emotions, you can carry a patriotic color theme over into your garden or houseplants. Here are some suggestions.

    • For an indoor arrangement with a patriotic motif (figure A), you can use white snap-dragons, blue Delphenium and red gerbera daisies.

    • Our arrangement was made from cut flowers using floral foam as a base (figure B).

    • For an outdoor window-box planting, lamb's ear (figure C) was used for the whitish tone to its textured foliage.

    • Beginning with the tallest plants as a centerpiece, blue salvia (figure D) were planted near the center of the box.

    • A time-release fertilizer (figure E) was added to the soil to help ensure that you have healthy plants.

    • Red geraniums, white kalanchoe and the lamb's ear were used to fill in the surrounding areas of the box (figure F).

    • Finally, blue lobelia -- a cascading plant with blue blooms (figure G) -- was used around the edges to create a softening effect (figure H).

These are a just a few suggestions for plants you could use. Impatiens would be another good choice, and are available in all of the colors of Old Glory. Explore the selection at your nursery for plants that will suit your patriotic theme.
