  • Quick Tip: Watering Hanging Baskets
  • From "Ask DIY"
    episode ADI-507
    advertisement

Flowers in hanging baskets may require a bit more watering than ordinary potted plants because of the limited amount of soil. The size and location of the hanging basket may also effect the watering requirements. Here are some suggestions to help reduce the watering needs of hanging baskets.

    • Place a plastic plant saucer in the bottom of the basket before you plant. The saucer will act as a water reservoir.

    • Another method is to sink a small pot with a drainage hole in the center of the hanging basket. Add soil to the basket so that it comes up to the level of the pot rim. Each time you water, simply fill the small pot with water. The water will be absorbed by the soil and will reduce water runoff.

    • You can mulch the hanging basket with sphagnum moss to help reduce the loss of moisture.

    • Finally, make certain that the soil level is about 1/2" below the top of the basket to help prevent runoff of excess water.
