| Assembly of Window Box Planter |
From "Woodworking" episode DIW-202 |

|
Because the window-box planter must stand radical temperature and moisture changes, assembly requires more than glue alone.
Materials: wood glue mallet screws drill small bar clamps 1" x 8" lumber (1 piece) Note: Download the flower-box plans, below right.

Use of a high-quality wood glue and clamping is essential, but notches and screws give this planter additional strength. Later, holes are drilled in the bottom to allow plants to drain properly.

1. First, apply glue to the slots in one of the longer pieces (the front or back). 2. Add end pieces to the slot and tap into place (figure A). 3. Pull remaining long pieces to the end pieces (figure B).
4. Use bar clamps to secure all pieces (figure C) during drying. 5. Measure bottom piece for snug fit. Cut to proper width and length (Johnson's is cut to 6-1/2" x 67"). 6. Apply a bead of glue (figure D) inside the bottom edges of planter. Align bottom with bottom edges of front, back and side pieces.
7. Use mallet to tap into place (figure E). 8. Use screws to secure bottom piece to edges of side, front and back pieces (figure F). 9. Drill drainage holes in bottom, spacing about 12" apart, beginning about 6" from each end.
