    Planter boxes are easy to build from pressure-treated wood or cedar.

    Cut boards to the size you want, and screw them together to form a box. Measure the inside length and width, and cut a piece for the bottom. Secure the bottom through the sides with galvanized screws.

    Attach cleats to the bottom of the box for a nice profile (figure A). Then drill three or four drainage holes in the bottom (figure B).

    Cut a piece of vinyl or nylon screen to fit into the bottom of the box (figure C). The screen will help hold gravel and dirt in the box.

    You can screw the box directly to your deck railing. Another option is to use a store-bought bracket system that attaches to the side of the railing (figure D).

    Other popular deck accessories include hummingbird feeders and citronella candles (figure E). If you use candles, don't leave them unattended.
