The majority of plants in Bob Pressler's garden have been shaped into bonsai.

Gardener Bob Pressler shares a few bonsai tips and techniques:

    • The finished shape should be envisioned before cutting. It's important to remember, however, that it can take plant or tree foliage two to three years to reach optimal shape and beauty. A bonsai is never finished, as more shaping is necessary throughout the plant's life.

    • When shaping, you always need to make cuts above a leaf or branch so that new growth is ensured.

    • You can use copper wire to reshape branches or trunk.

    • Cuts grow together and become invisible if you use a concave cutter.

    • Cedars are a good choice to practice bonsai techniques because the branches are flexible and the shape is forgiving.
