Victorian society was characterized by, among other things, a repression of emotions; as a consequence, gardens became symbolic as a way of expressing feelings that had no "respectable" outlet. Beautiful, lush -- yet festive and colorful -- gardens were the result. The order of the garden was both elegant and jumbled, with formal, romantic roses nestling among weeping foliage and lush plantings. Color played an important role too: the many shades and textures of green were important in the plantings, as was the cool color palette of purples, pinks, blues and white, mixed with splashes of yellow. In this episode of Weekend Gardening, host Maureen Gilmer uses design software to create an inviting, romantic Victorian- style garden around a formerly neglected back porch. As with any garden, the first step is preparation of the area to be planted. Steps: - Gilmer prepares a semicircular planting area around the paved brick entry (figure A). She works the soil to a loose consistency, removing any debris or gravel. Note that the planting area is kept the same width throughout the length of the bed.
Note: The plants used here are suited to the Northeast zone; check with your local nursery or garden center to select the plants best suited for your gardening climate. - Gilmer lays out steppingstones to create a pathway to the brick area, leaving about an inch of space around the stones (figure B).
