Hanging gardens are extremely heavy and require careful preparations in order to hang securely. Steps:
- The flat baskets must be attached to the arbor walls using anchor bolts, which are drilled into the masonry of the wall, not the wall itself (figure A). Don't try to overpower the drill speed when drilling into masonry --steady pressure is the key to success -- and remember: always use protective eyewear when working with power tools.
- Arbor beams must be in excellent condition and securely attached to their support structure to hold the weight of a well-watered basket. Use heavy-duty chain to hang the giant basket from the arbor (figure B). The thickness of the chain's links determines how much weight the chain can hold. For example, 1/8" chain can support 340 pounds, while 1/4" chain can support 450 pounds.
- Use s- hooks to attach the baskets to the chain (figure C). S-hooks are also available in various sizes, depending on the size of the chain used.
- Baskets of Dragon Wing (TM) begonia (Begonia X Hybrida ) (takes full sun with continual bloom), Lavender Wave (TM) petunia (Petunia X Hybrida) and million bells (Calibrachoa) (heavy bloom and smaller flowers in shades of sunset and purple) -- all purchased from a nursery -- are also hung from chains.
