  • Gardening Quick Tip: Amaryllis
  • From "Ask DIY"
    episode ADI-713
    advertisement

Amaryllis makes a great indoor-blooming plant, and you can have it ready for a winter bloom with little effort. When the blooms fade, cut off the entire flower stalk and continue fertilizing the plant every two to three weeks. This lets the bulb produce a few new leaves. Let the soil and leaves dry out in the pot, remove the bulb and store it in a cool, dry location for about three months. After this dormancy period, plant the bulb in new soil, keeping the top about 1/3 above the soil. Water and feed it regularly, and before you know it, your amaryllis will have a new bloom.
