    Tips:

    • If you want to paint flashing to match your roof, first coat it with vinegar then wipe it dry. The vinegar will etch the surface slightly and allow a primer coat to stick.

    • Estimated life expectancy of roofing products:

      Asphalt -- 15-30 years
      Wood -- 15-30 years
      Metal -- 20-50 years
      Tile -- 50 years
      Slate -- 50-100 years

    • If you can't wait for the next rain to track down a roof leak, try having someone spray the suspected area with a garden hose while you inspect from inside the attic.

    • To add a cool tool tray to your ladder, cut a board to match the size of your top step. Add holes to fit your tools and attach it with hinges. Keep it open to hold your tools, fold it up for storage or to lean against a wall.

    • Vinyl siding must be attached so that expansion and contraction are not restricted. When you're hanging it, be sure to leave a 1/4-inch gap for expansion wherever siding meets accessories.

    • If you must paint vinyl siding, stay away from dark colors. Heat-absorbing dark colors could distort your siding when exposed to strong sunlight.
