Removing the damaged shingle - To locate the nails holding the damaged shingle, lift the tabs two courses (rows) above it and then the adjacent tabs one course above it. If a tab is sealed down, gently work a putty knife or a trowel under it and along its edges to loosen it.
- To pull out a nail, first fit a flat pry bar under the tab and around the nail shaft, and pry (illustration A, click above to view). Remove the pry bar and fit it around the raised nailhead on top of the tab, and pry the nail out. Continue until all the nails holding the damaged shingle are removed. Pull out the damaged shingle.
Fitting a replacement shingle - Slide the new shingle into position under the tabs one course above (illustration B, click above to view) and aligned with the tabs on each side. If necessary, trim the replacement shingle with tin snips.
- Use a putty knife or a trowel to apply roofing cement on the bottom of the new shingle about 2 inches from the edges of the corners of each tab. Press each tab down firmly to seal it.
Nailing the replacement shingle - Hold up in turn the adjacent tabs one course above the new shingle, and drive a roofing nail into the new shingle just below the self-sealing adhesive and about 1 inch from each side.
- Also nail at intervals specified by the manufacturer: for a three-tab shingle, at each cutout (illustration C, click above to view); for a one-tab shingle, 12 inches from each side (illustration D, top, click above to view); for a two-tab shingle, 5 inches from each side of the cutout (illustration D, bottom, click above to view).
- Use a putty knife or a trowel to apply roofing cement on the bottom of the adjacent tabs one course above the new shingle, so the cement covers each nail. Press each tab down firmly to seal it onto the roofing cement.
- Using the same procedure, nail the adjacent tabs one course above the new shingle about 1 inch to the side of each sealed hole. Then seal the tab two courses above each tab of the new shingle with roofing cement.
Estimated cost:
Roofing nails (5 lbs.) = $4.30 Roofing cement = $5.60 Replacement shingles = $8.99
Total = $18.89
