DIY's Complete Fix-It host Brad Staggs shows a homeowner how to repoint the crumbling mortar in his chimney. Materials:
Scaffolding (with safety rails) Safety glasses Chisel Stiff brush for cleaning off dust Mortar Wheelbarrow and hoe (for mixing mortar) Brick trowel Tuck pointer Mortar bag
- Check the brick on top of the chimney, and use a chisel to remove any loose mortar. Brush off any dust and debris.
- With a hoe, mix the mortar in a wheelbarrow and place it in a bucket. Take the bucket up to the roof and use it to fill the mortar bag. On a smaller job a brick trowel and tuck pointer may suffice for filling the joints, but on a job this size a mortar bag, which is similar to a cake-decorating bag, makes the process go much faster (figure A).
- Use a tuck pointer or jointers, which come in either concave or convex shapes, to joint, or smooth out, the mortar between the bricks (figure B).
