Adobe Photoshop is a popular image-editing software program. It offers several options for repairing pictures, one being the Clone Stamp tool, which allows unblemished portions of a photo to be digitally inserted over damaged areas of the picture. Essentially, you are making a copy of an area that's not damaged and pasting it in where the area is damaged.

    • The Healing Brush tool goes one step further by digitally mimicking the texture, lighting and shading of what you insert to blend it seamlessly with the portion of the picture surrounding the repair area. With these tools, damaged areas of photos can be removed, and when they're reprinted on photo paper, even someone with a discerning eye will have a hard time spotting where the repair was made.

    • To enlarge a photo, use the scanner software to scale the picture during the scan. You don't want to wait until the scan is made to bring it into the image-editing program to make it bigger because the resolution that you scan will be reduced when the picture is made larger, and detail will be lost.

    • If the picture has shifted and scanned crooked, use the crop tool to crop the image and rotate it in place. This is done by clicking and dragging the mouse.

    • Fine-tune the colors if necessary. If the colors in the background are washed out, they can be corrected with a variety of image adjustments that can be previewed to show how the picture will look with each correction. Adjustments can also be made manually, giving more control over the corrections.

    • One invaluable technique to know when working with flash photography is how to remove red eye, which is the back of the retina reflected by the camera flash.

    • To correct red eye, use a soft brushstroke and the sponge tool, which allows the color to be removed by "desaturating."

Types of brushes in the sponge tool.

    • Here, Berg makes a brush choice and chooses the Elliptical Marquee Tool, which enables her to select just the area she wants to correct.

    • Next, she selects the sponge tool and sets it to desaturate.

    • She then selects the brush size and magnifies the portion of the image that will be corrected, allowing her to fine-tune the correction.

    • After removing all the red, she goes back to the size she scanned, and the red eye is gone, taking only a few minutes to correct.

Trying filters to sharpen photo focus.

    • While the image was being corrected, Berg noticed that the image was slightly blurred, so she used a filter to give the illusion that the picture is in focus. She chose the unsharpened mask from the sharpen filters to compensate for softness in the picture. This filter offers a wide range of potential corrections, but it does have a trade-off: the more the image is sharpened, the more harsh the outline of the child's face becomes. Keeping this in mind, be sure to experiment with the settings to see which works best for the correction.

    • Remember, what can be done to any picture depends on the quality of the original. It is better to improve a defect slightly than to overcompensate and end up with an image that is less flattering than the original.
