  • Using a Video Camera as a Home Security Device
  • Using a Video Camera as a Home Security Device
    From "Making Home Movies"
    episode DMHM-104

In addition to capturing important events, you can also use your camera as a tool. Increasingly camcorders are being used to document what we own in case we are victims of a burglary or a fire. These aren't scenarios that anyone likes to think about, but they do happen, and when they do, video records can be invaluable.

    1. When you're creating a home video inventory, first record several wide shots of your house (figure A).

    2. Follow with a walking tour of the rooms in your house. This provides a basic virtual layout.

    3. Concentrate on close-ups of items, including details and brand names (figure B).

    4. In addition to shooting furniture (figure C) and other large items, videotape jewelry. Choose a neutral background, such as a blue T-shirt, and lay out the jewelry so each piece can be clearly seen and identified (figure D).

    5. Do the same for china (figure E), silver and collectibles. Shoot tight shots of individual pieces as well as the collection as a whole, being sure to shoot close-ups of design, detail and any manufacturer's markings on the back (figure F).

    6. Record tight shots of important documents and receipts.

    7. Record power tools (figure G), cars and any items kept in the garage.

    8. Talk as you tape, noting key facts about the items, such as where they are in the house and your best guess as to when they were purchased and their cost.

    9. Make at least two or three copies of the tape, and store copies at the office, in a safety deposit box and with close friends.

It may sound like overkill, but this is a simple project that may one day prove invaluable.
