    Figure B

You can take dramatic pictures at night, says DIY Photography host Rick Sammon, but you'll need the right tools:

    1. A flashlight that lights from both the end and the center (figure A) is handy because it leaves your hands free for changing film.

    2. Use fast film -- ISO 400 or 800.

    3. Use a wide-angle lens. It will help you get the whole scene, and you won't have to worry as much about holding the camera rock steady. Telephoto lenses exaggerate camera shake.

    4. Fill the frame. If you don't and are using a flash, your subject will be overexposed.

    5. When you're taking vertical shots, an outside-the-camera flash unit can make it uncomfortable to hold the camera. Brace your elbow against your body to help steady your hand (figure B).

    6. Use a tripod.

    7. Wear a reflector for safety, especially when you're shooting near a street.
