You can take dramatic pictures at night, says DIY Photography host Rick Sammon, but you'll need the right tools: - A flashlight that lights from both the end and the center (figure A) is handy because it leaves your hands free for changing film.
- Use fast film -- ISO 400 or 800.
- Use a wide-angle lens. It will help you get the whole scene, and you won't have to worry as much about holding the camera rock steady. Telephoto lenses exaggerate camera shake.
- Fill the frame. If you don't and are using a flash, your subject will be overexposed.
- When you're taking vertical shots, an outside-the-camera flash unit can make it uncomfortable to hold the camera. Brace your elbow against your body to help steady your hand (figure B).
- Use a tripod.
- Wear a reflector for safety, especially when you're shooting near a street.
