Digital-imaging expert Steve Powell says it's incredibly easy and inexpensive to enter the world of digital imaging. He shows DIY Photography host Rick Sammon a few of the latest tools.

You can get digital images even if you don't have a digital camera and are using the simplest kind of film camera. When you turn your film in for processing, ask for your pictures to be scanned to an online site or onto a CD.

If they're scanned to the Internet, your photos are uploaded to a secure web site. You'll enter a password to view your pictures. Click on any of the thumbnail images to see larger versions and get a better look at them. You can order prints or photo gifts or send e-mail.

When your pictures come back on a CD, powerful software comes with them. It enables you to modify your pictures and correct mistakes -- for example, to lighten an image that's too dark (figure A), crop a photo or get rid of redeye (figure B ). You can send your pictures to friends and family via e-mail or transfer photos to your hard drive.

Digital cameras let you review pictures and send them out immediately, but that doesn't mean you have to own one to enjoy the benefits of digital images. And you don't have to worry about shelving your 35mm single-lens-reflex film camera anytime soon. It continues to give superior resolution and much greater versatility, and it requires far fewer battery replacements. Although advancements in computers and photo finishing are quickly bringing the two worlds together, there's still plenty of room for both.
