A speck of dirt can scratch an entire roll of film. Always use a very soft brush (figure A) to remove dust and dirt from the inside of a camera, advises DIY Photography host Rick Sammon. Be very gentle. Never use air cleaners, which will damage the shutter in the back.

Lenses have about the same coating as nonreflective eyeglass lenses. To clean the lens, use a lens cloth, available from eyewear or photography stores. Gently rub from the inside out (figure B) to get rid of dirt, grime and fingerprints.

To remove smudges, use a soft lint-free glove (figure C), available from photography stores, and gently rub a bit of antifog spray on the lens, working from the inside out. (Stores sell lens cleaners too, but Sammon prefers antifog spray.) If your lens is removable, clean the rear element too: a fingerprint there will make pictures look soft.

Tip: To make sure your battery is always relatively fresh, change it every year on your birthday.
