Waterproof disposable cameras come in handy at the beach or in the rain or snow.

If you're thinking about buying a new camera, consider how you want to use it, how much versatility and control you need, whether you'll want to use extra lenses and how much you want to spend. Depending on your answers, each of the types of cameras described below could find a place in your camera bag. You may think that the pros don't use disposable cameras, but they do. "These cameras are so handy," says photography expert and author Rick Sammon, host of DIY Photography. "They come loaded with film, they're point-and-shoot, and you don't have to make any camera adjustments." After you take the last picture, you turn the camera in for processing and receive prints -- but not the camera -- in return. Single-use cameras can't do fancy photography, but they're great to have on hand both at home and in the field. And you don't have to worry about damaging your camera. Another good choice is a compact point-and-shoot camera with a built-in zoom lens. You can zoom from a moderately wide angle to medium telephoto. Film is easy to load, and the camera is easy to operate. The downside: what you see in the viewfinder is not exactly what the lens sees. To get the greatest versatility and maximize opportunities for creative photography, you'll want a 35mm single lens reflex (SLR) camera. It gives you the option of both automatic and manual operation and the ability to interchange lenses -- and lets you see precisely what you'll capture on film.
