  • Girl's Attic Bedroom Storage
  • Karl frees up floor space with a built-in cabinet under an angled roof.
    From "Wasted Spaces"
    episode DWSP-205

    (Continued from page 3)

Katie's custom cabinet is ready to install. She helps Karl sheath the cabinet with insulation board, then the trio slips the cabinet into place and attaches it to the roof studs with screws. After a few finishing touches, Katie can fill her new storage unit.

Now, Katie has her own built-in storage – and she helped build it herself!
Tip: Whenever you install cabinetry or other built-in storage in an attic, it's important to insulate it to protect the contents and prevent heat loss in the room.

    • Measure and cut foam insulation to cover the outside of the cabinet shell. Karl used a chalk line to mark the cut lines, then cut the insulation with a circular saw.

Safety Alert: Wear a dust mask and eye protection when cutting foam insulation.

    • Secure the foam insulation to the outside of the cabinet with adhesive (figure A). Reinforce with a few screws.

    • At the wall, measure the distance from the sides of the opening to the roof studs. Use a pencil to transfer these measurements to the cabinet.

    • Tip the cabinet forward, lift it from underneath and slide it into place so that it is flush with the wall.

    • Drive screws into the roof studs from the inside of the cabinet to hold it securely in place (figure B).

    • Measure, cut, prime and paint trim to surround the outside edges of the cabinet. Install the trim to give the cabinet a finished look.

    • Touch up paint on the walls and cabinet.
