    Lockers and Parking Sensor

Team Caldwell's super sports garage is almost ready for action. Karl builds a rough-and-tumble platform to hold the sports-style lockers and shows Jill how to install a laser parking sensor powered by the light of the garage door opener.

    Installing the Lockers

    1. Karl built a level platform out of water-resistant, pre-treated lumber to hold the lockers up off the garage floor. This will help protect them from any water that may accumulate in the garage and also act as a kick plate for when hurried kits scramble to get their belongings.

    2. The lockers need to be attached to the wall for safety and stability. Karl installed a ledger board – a long, sturdy strip of wood – across the length of the wall where the lockers will sit so they can be secured at any point.

    3. To install the board, first use a stud finder and pencil to mark the location of the studs.

    4. The lockers Karl used have screw holes for attaching to the wall. Mark the location of the holes on the wall, then use a level to position the board.

    5. Screw the board into the studs at the right height. With the board in place, the lockers can be secured safety to the wall even if they're not right in front of a stud.

    6. Secure the lockers with screws.

    Installing the laser sensor

Thanks to this Wasted Spaces makeover, the Caldwells' garage can store their sports essentials with room left over to park cars! To save even more space, Karl helps Jill install a laser parking sensor to take the guesswork out of parking.

    1. The laser sensor needs no batteries – it's powered by the light from the garage door opener. Simply use the handy adhesive backing to stick the sensor onto the opener's light, and it will power up every time the door operates (figure A).

    2. Determine where you want the car to stop when parked. Attach the laser sensor to the garage ceiling at this point, using the adhesive backing on the sensor (figure B).
