    Materials:

    trim
    wood conditioner
    stain
    polyurethane sealer
    clean rag
    finish nail gun
    wood glue
    miter saw

    Trim Tips:

    • Leave a 1/8" reveal around the doorframe.

    • Build a doorframe or window frame on the ground first, and then install it around the door.

    Safety Alert:

    • Always wear protective eyewear when working with power tools.

    How to Install Trim:

    • Prepare the trim for installation. With a rag, Cassie wipes the wood with wood conditioner, stain and polyurethane sealer, letting each coat dry before starting on the next layer (figure A).

    • When all the pieces have been prepped and dried, Adam and Dave measure the area around the door (figure B).

    • They take their measurements out to the miter saw and cut a piece of trim to that length (figure C), keeping in mind they want a 1/8" reveal on the door way and a 45-degree angle cut on the inside of the door jam.

    • Adam lays the trim on the ground in the shape of the door (figure D). He puts glue on the cut side of the trim and fits the two sides together.

    • Adam drills a small pilot hole through the top of the trim (figure E). Then he sinks a screw into that hole. He then shoots a finish nail into the opposite corner (figure F).

    • Adam nails the trim into place (figure G).

    • With the door trim in place, Dave decides to hire a handyman to finish the room.
