    Materials:

    mask
    pry bar
    reciprocating saw
    circular saw
    jig saw
    1 1/4" screws
    drill
    tape measure
    1/2" wood for subfloor

    Subfloor Installation

    1. Wear a mask to protect yourself from possible mold in the rotted floor (figure A).

    2. The first step in removing the subfloor is to find and remove the nails.

    3. Cut around the base of the floor with a reciprocating saw (figure B).

    4. Be sure to turn off the power to the room since there could be wires running under the floor or behind the wall.

    5. If you are unsure about the placement of your wires, have a spotter below to watch the blade as it moves through the wood.

    6. Keeping the blade at a 45-degree angle to the floor allows you to make sure that you cut all of the plywood out from underneath the bottom (figure C).

    7. For the next piece, snap a line along the center of the joist to keep it available as a nailer for your new subfloor (figure D).

    8. Use a circular saw to cut along the line while riping out the rest of the nails (figure E).

    9. With everything cleaned out, take measurements for the new subfloor (figure F).

    10. Transfer the measurements to the new half inch plywood, and make the cuts with a circular saw.

    11. Use a jigsaw if necessary to cut any indentations for the vent stack.

    12. With the old floor gone, place a piece of scrap lumber across the joists to give yourself a nice safe place to stand on.

    13. The new plywood will be attached with construction adhesive and screws. Set the boards in place (figure G).
