  • How to install crown molding
    From "Bathroom Renovations"
    episode DBTR-403

Continuing with the old world theme, the crew measures and cuts pre-primed crown molding that resembles old world plaster molding. Once all of their pieces are cut, they adhere the molding to the bathroom walls.

    1. Measure the wall. Measure from the finished edge and mark.

    2. For a straight cut, line up the saw on zero and run it through the molding material. For the angle cut, move the saw into the 45 degree position. The placement of the saw is crucial.

    3. Place the molding against the saw at the same angle as it will relate to the ceiling (figure A).

    4. Use the coping saw to cut away the excess of the 45-degree angle cut (figure B). Use the utility knife to finish the edge (figure C), making it perfectly smooth to get the tightest seam.

    5. Dry fit the cut pieces (figure D).

    6. Use both construction adhesive and finish nails for the installation. Run a line of adhesive just inside the edge along the groove (figure E). Place it here because the grooves are right in the center of the surface that will touch the wall. Use a straight edge to smooth out the adhesive.

    7. When placing the molding to fit in the corner, it is crucial to dry fit another adjoining piece to ensure you have the proper angle.

    8. Hold the molding in place until the adhesive dries. Shoot a couple of inch and a quarter finish nails with the nail gun (figure F). Driving them in at an angle keeps the molding from pulling away from the wall.

    9. Work your way around the room.
