    Trimming Windows

    1. Build extension jambs with 1x ripped to the correct width. Cut boards to length on a miter saw then nail them together to form a box.

    2. Add spray foam insulation around the windows before adding the extension jambs (figure A).

    3. Set the extension jambs in place and add shims as needed (figure B). Secure the jambs with nails, then stuff insulation around them.

    4. Cut 1x4 trim boards to length and attach with a finish nailer (figure C).

    Replacing Entry Door

    1. Remove the hinge pins and pull off the door.

    2. Carefully remove existing trim with a hammer and prybar (figure D). Be extra careful if you want to reuse the trim.

    3. Cut the nails around the door frame and remove it.

    4. Add a piece of green-treated lumber for the threshold and secure it with screws (figure E).

    5. Build out the opening with 2x4s if needed (figure F).

    6. Put a bead of silicone on the threshold and set the door in place (figure G).

    7. Check for level and plumb, then secure the door with nails.
