UnderDeck® Installation
1. First, make sure the deck is plumb and level (figure A).
2. Set the pitch line on both sides of each joist. This is for water drainage. Run the joist rails parallel with your joist so the water goes downhill.
3. Calculate the proper pitch by snapping a pitch line along each side of the joist (figure B). Start at the ledger board end of the joist and measure up a maximum of 3-1/2 inches from the bottom of the joist. Continue along the joist, dropping the line 1/8th inch per foot.
4. Line up the joist rails with the chalk line. Attach the first joist rail one to two inches away from the ledger board. Then, continue attaching the rails along each side of the joist leaving about two inches between rails. Attach the rails with exterior grade screws (figure C).
5. Use a pre-cut cardboard spacer to determine the space between the rails (figure D).
6. For the collector panels, take measurements and use a utility knife to cut the panels 1/4 inch shorter than the joist length. This will accommodate expansion due to temperature changes (figure E).
7. Measure and cut the width of each panel 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches wider than the space between the joists. This is important because the wider panels will curve when popped into the joist rails, creating the arc for water runoff.
8. Slide one long edge of the collector panel into the joist rail. Then, pushing up on the center of the collector panel, snap the opposite side into the adjacent joist rail (figure F).
9. Next, put in the joist gutters. These clip into the joist rails and give a nice angle for water to runoff.
10. Cut the joist gutters a 1/4 inch shorter than the joist length to allow for heat expansion. Once cut to size, each end of the gutter must be prepped prior to installation. At the ledger end of the joist gutters, attach five inches of rubber weather stripping with silicone chalk (figure G). This will help form a water dam at the home end of the gutter.
11. At the other end, where this tips into the other gutter, turn the edge down a little with a spanner or pliers. This creates a slight drip edge.
12. To attach the joist gutters, hold it up to the bottom of the joist. Spread the gutter open slightly while pushing up firmly until the gutter snaps into the joist rail (figure H).
13. Squeeze the sides of the gutter to ensure a tight fit into the opposing joist rail slots.
14. Continue to install the joist gutters along each joist, completing the install in one area before moving the scaffolding.
15. Once a section is complete, repeat the entire process until the end of the deck is reached.
16. Fortify the system with aluminum flashing strips (figure I).
17. Run a bead of silicone chalk along strips of 90 degree flashing. Press securely into place. This creates a waterproof seal between the brick and the deck.
18. The boundary gutter fastens up to the back of the joist rails (figure J).
19. Trim the gutters with tin snips to fit securely along the joist gutters. Seal the edges and gaps using silicone chalk and finish by installing the downspouts.
20. The UnderDeck® system is complete (figure K)!
