Garden Bench Construction
1. With a table saw, rip 2x6 lumber into two pieces (figure A).
2. Use a sliding compact miter saw to cut the rail boards to their finish length.
3. Using a miter saw, begin cutting the tongue and groove cedar paneling into small pieces that will form the sides, front and top of the bench. When fit together, these pieces will become the outside of the new storage unit.
4. Make a few cuts with the circular saw, followed by a couple of screws with a screw gun to create the angled bench legs.
5. Line everything up and fasten it together (figure B). For the box, make sure the smooth side is facing out and the rough side is facing in. This fits together in the little rebate or recess section.
6. Screw the components together with stainless steel screws.
7. Reinforce the unit with support strips and attach them using a nail gun.
8. Slide the tongue and groove pieces into the recess boards to create the front face of the bench (figure C).
9. Screw both angled sides to the front unit (figure D).
10. Attach a couple more support strips.
11. Once the front of the bench is complete, repeat the same process to create the back of the bench.
12. The bottom of the bench is given additional support with strips of wood spaced out between the front and back panels (figure E).
13. Attach the arms and build the top piece. This can easily be removed for storage.
14. The bencyh is finished (figure F)!
