Hanging Wallpaper
1. Starting with a clean wall, mark a line with a level or plumb from the far corner of the room at a distance one inch less than the width of the paper (normally 19-1/2).
2. Fill a plastic wallpaper tray 2/3 full with cold water.
Note: Cold water activates the glue, but hot water will dissolve it.
3. Cut the wallpaper strips 4-inches longer than the wall height.
4. Re-roll the paper strip backwards with the glue side out (figure A). Polling loosely ensures the water can circulate enough to saturate the total backing surface.
5. Soak each strip in water (figure B). After 30 seconds, slowly withdraw half the strip...being sure the pre-pasted side is completely wet.
6. Using the 8-foot long table with the soaking trough set at one end, allows the paper to be pulled easily out of the water and laid flat as the paper gets folded paste side to paste side (figure C). This process is called "booking."
7. Next, roll the paper up like a newspaper...careful not to crease the ends (figure D).
8. Leave the paper to tack up, or cure, for roughly 5 minutes.
9. Unfold the top half and position the strip against the wall, lining it against our original mark. Unfold the bottom half and align it as well.
10. Continue this method with each successive sheet, butting the new piece against the previous.
11. Smooth paper onto the wall using gentle pressure as all the air bubbles are eased out (figure E).
12. Using a razor knife, trim the excess paper from top to bottom (figure F).
13. Finally, use a clean, damp sponge to remove excess glue that seeps from between the seams (figure G).
