Framing Archway
1. Rip the lumber for the frame by using a table saw.
2. Cut the wood long ways using a table saw with a fence, which is the guide that helps cut straight against the line (figure A).
3. Determine the measurement of the wood by basing it on the thickness of the wall measurement that it is sitting within.
4. When working with a load bearing wall, a slip header is required. It is made from 2x6s nailed together and cut using a miter saw with a long, narrow blade. The header will replace the original 2x4 studs that were removed when the hole was taken out (figure B).
5. Cut the jack studs to be placed on either side of the frame to hold the header in place and secure them using 3-inch wood screws (figure C).
6. The trim for this particular doorway needs to be custom-made to match the unique details in the rest of the house (figure D). With newer homes, ready-made trim is the way to go.
7. Attach the new casings using a nail gun and finishing nails.
8. Fill any nail holes with wood putty and paint.
