  • Hidden Shelving Installation
  • From "DIY to the Rescue"
    episode DTTR-604

The team gets started on building hidden shelving that will be used as a bookshelf, toy chest and storage. They start by cutting the plywood for the project and then assemble it using a circular saw, nail gun and wood glue. Once the piece is put together, the doors are installed.

    Materials:

    wood
    wood glue
    nail gun
    castors
    carriage bolts
    socket wrench
    hex nuts
    door handles
    wheels

    Storage Unit

    1. Once the wood is cut, start assembling the case.

    2. First, glue the shelves and side uprights together (figure A).

    3. As you glue the pieces, make sure to follow up with a nail gun to secure the pieces together.

    4. Once the shelves are in place, attach the side boards using wood glue and a nail gun.

    5. Measure the width and height of the unit for the plywood backing (figure B).

    6. Cut the wood with a circular saw adjusted to the 1/2 inch thickness of the plywood.

    7. Cut a second board to cover the width of the bookcase.

    8. Cut paneling to match the plywood backing boards.

    9. Put the plywood down with the factory edge to the inside (figure C).

    10. Secure with nails about a 1/24 inch to the edge.

    11. Apply a liberal amount of wood glue to the top for the paneling veneer. Next, use the nail gun to secure it to the back.

    12. Add trim molding to finish off the exterior of the unit.

    13. Finally, install 2x4 blocks where the door hinges will be.

    Door Installation

    1. Drill castor bolt holes at the bottom of the shelves, then install the carriage bolts (figure D). Secure each with a washer and hex nut using a socket wrench.

    2. Install the hinges onto the sides of the door with the pin at the top, so they don't fall out (figure E).

    3. With the door in position, mark the hinge placement on the closet frame.

    4. Install the hinge plates and carefully move the door into position.

    5. Join the hinges and secure them with the pin.

    7. Finally, add handles to the front of the doors and paint the doors to match the wall (figure F).

    8. The unit is something to see. It looks great (figure G)!
