    Vanity Tips:

    • For master bathrooms, it may be advisable to steer away from pedestal sinks. Pedestals offer no storage space and are better served adorning smaller bathrooms with minimal storage needs.

    • When considering boosting home value, choose cabinet height wisely. As the population grows taller, cabinets ranging from 34"-36" are quickly supplanting the old industry standard of 32".

    • No matter the grade, the key to perceived value of cabinets is clean installation.

    Safety Alerts:

    • Before installing vanity cabinets, make sure to turn off the water supply to prevent against accidental breakage of exposed pipe stubs.

    • Always wear protective eyewear when working with power tools.

    Vanity Installation

    • Upon arrival of the Cantalamessa’s new vanity cabinets, general contractor Adam Berlin gets them started by removing all the doors to protect against damage (figure A).

    • After indicating the location of the underlying wall studs, Adam instructs Laura to line up the back of the cabinet to its new location and mark holes for water and drain lines. She drills using both a spade bit and a hole saw attachment to create holes for the plumbing (figure B).

    • Next, Joel fits the cabinet in place over the pipe stubs (figure C). Then, checking frequently with a level, Adam uses wood shims to raise and adjust the position of the cabinet (figure D). Later the shims are cut flush and covered with a trim piece.

    • With the cabinet positioned properly, Laura drives two screws in through the back of cabinet and into the wall studs marked earlier (figure E).

    • Joel and Laura install the two remaining cabinets using the same procedure. Once secured, they hide exposed gaps with trim pieces included with the cabinets.
