Retrofit recessed can lighting can usually be installed at any time! Lighting Tips: - Add one can light for every 25 square feet of ceiling space.
- Look your best! Offset the vanity lights above the sinks. This allows more even lighting while minimizing harsh contrasts between shadow and light.
- Adding a $20 dimmer switch gives even more control over the ambience of the room.
Safety Alerts: - Consult with a licensed electrician to prevent against overloading a circuit. Always cut power before working on a circuit.
- Wear appropriate protective eyewear and clothing when working near insulation and using power tools.
- Make sure to select light fixtures rated for direct contact with insulation.
Lighting - To begin, Adam accesses the area above the bathroom ceiling through a crawl space (figure B). He notes any obstructions such as electrical wires or pipes.
- Finding nothing to inhibit the placement of the new light fixtures, he starts by extending power from the existing can light using 14-2 wiring. Meanwhile, Joel takes measurements on the ceiling and locates overhead joists using a stud finder (figure C). Between the joists he marks the locations for the three new lights.
- Using a circular template included with the light fixture, Joel traces a circle pattern onto the ceiling (figure D).
- Next, Joel carefully cuts out the circle using a drywall saw (figure E).
- Then, Joel reaches into the hole and pulls out the wiring run from the original light fixture. After stripping the wire, he connects it to terminals on the first new light (figure F). From these terminals, he runs new wiring to the next light fixture.
- With each fixture properly wired, Adam shows him how to insert it into the hole and engage built-in catches which grab the surrounding drywall securing the light in place (figure G).
- Once all three fixtures are set into place, Joel attaches the baffle and trim pieces by connecting two springs to the inside of the fixture (figure H).
- After screwing in new light bulbs and restoring power to the circuit, Joel and Adam flip the switch, revealing a simple job done well.
